Earth Project

EARTH Project began 13 years ago to  fulfill a need to provide pre-vocational training and socialization activities for special needs youth in Macon County. For eight weeks during the summer, 42 youths are able to receive the benefits of hands-on life and pre-vocational  training skills.  This will enable them to have a better chance of securing employment and positive social interactions so that they eventually will become independent and valuable members of the community in which they choose to live.  Students earn an hourly rate of pay and learn to budget and plan finances.
To qualify for this program the students must have a developmental disability, must be eligible for special education, and must live in Macon County.  These students would typically spend the majority of their day in a special education program  (at least 2 classes).
Department heads in special education at each of the high schools and junior highs will receive a letter and applications explaining EARTH Project requirements and hiring procedures in April.  These teachers will then distribute the letter and application to those students they feel would benefit from this program.  The letter will give the student a date and time in April when they should return the application and interview with an EARTH Project representative.
If you have a student you feel will benefit from this program, please contact the appropriate department head in your school.  If you have any further questions or would like to refer a student directly, please contact program director Thomas Taylor through school mail at MacArthur High School or Janette Taylor at Pershing School or e-mail jmtaylor@dps51.org.
